BIG NEWS: Nomads No More!

After 4 great years of providing creative LAB services throughout the district, traveling from school to school (without a home from which to provide service) The Lab will get its own physical space, an actual school home!  Over the summer, we will move into what has been for many years, Homecroft Elementary. It is located in the Highland area, near the intersection of Fairview and St. Paul Avenues.

Our home will be on the ground floor, with enough classrooms to distinctly hold space for each of the 4 LAB modalities (Poetry, Visual Art, Technology and Experiential Wellness), a cafeteria space with a stage, office space for our growing LAB team and shared access to a gym.

In addition to our existing services (which will continue), The LAB will become a field trip destination for our EBD program sites that we currently serve.  We will provide enrichment performances and activities grounded in our four modalities; staff development support to the EBD teams; and on-site short term residencies for students to further explore Poetry, Technology, Visual Art and Experiential Wellness.

Stay tuned for more information as we grow into our new digs!  This summer will be an exciting planning time for The LAB team.  There is a lot to do, including, raising money to support our growth.  Please read on to the next article to learn more about our 4-Week Fundraising Blitz!

4-Week Fundraising Blitz!

We are excited to announce a 4-Week Fundraising Blitz, to support our next steps in The LAB.   All donations raised by June 6th will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $1,000) by several generous donors.  All donations are tax deductible.  Please help us reach our goal.  Forward this to family & friends who  might support us!

Your donation will support two specific things for The Lab.
1.  You will help us to continue our basic LAB services
In this past school year, we raised $9,750 through small grants and donations, all of which supported the services and publishing/production opportunities that went directly to and for our students. Here is a snapshot of our primary expenses from this school year, 2007-2008:

  • Poetry anthologies/spoken word CDs: $1,775
  • Guest Artists, Speakers, Art Therapist: $4,200
  • Art Supplies and Curriculum Materials: $1,750
  • E-Newsletter Distribution: $50
  • Mac Laptop: $1560 for VISTA worker/Tech LAB
  • LAB student Journals: $400
  • No Cost: 15 volunteer LAB mentors
  • No Cost: 2 social Work Interns + 1 HECUA Intern
  • No Cost: Full time VISTA worker for 1 year

2.  Your donation in this Fundraising Blitz will also support new services offered on-site at the new LAB location.  Specifically, it will allow us to hire inspiring and skilled guest artists and guest speakers to perform for students in the morning Enrichment aspect of The LAB, and to work with students in the afternoon Residencies.

These 2 specific increased opportunities are very exciting for students like "B" who can't wait to begin his Poetry/Tech Residencies with The Lab in the Fall.

"The LAB gives me another reason to come to school.  The LAB helped me realize I have talent and interests in poetry and technology. I want to go to the new LAB location so I can do more with poetry and technology".
 ~ "B", LAB participant

Please support our next steps in The LAB.  Remember, all donations raised by June 6th will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $1,000.  All donations are tax deductible.   Send your checks now!
